The Life and Loves of a She-Devil

By Fay Weldon. Pantheon Books. BY now, Fay Weldon's readers know pretty much what to expect in her novels: marital infidelities, suburban angst and large helpings of female rage. The heroine of her first novel - ''The Fat Woman's Joke'' - was a middle-aged woman named Esther who had traded in her philandering husband for the dubious satisfactions of the single life; and most of Miss Weldon's subsequent heroines have shared both Esther's plight and her talent for gaining weight and complaining. Ruth, the ''she-devil'' in Miss Weldon's latest novel, is no exception. Ruth and her husband, an accountant with the unfortunate name of Bobbo, live in a pretty house with two bathrooms and picture windows in the picturesque suburb of Eden Grove - a ''place which was planned as paradise.

Genre: Novel. When Ruth's unfaithful and unappreciative husband Bobbo calls her a she-devil, she decides to appropriate that identity with a vengeance and take a different spot in the power relations of the world. She wants revenge, power, money, and "to be loved and not love in return" Specifically, Ruth wants to bring about the downfall of her husband's lover, Mary Fisher, a pretty, blonde romance novelist who lives in a tower by the sea and lacks for neither love nor money nor power. Ruth commences her elaborate revenge by burning down her own home and dumping her surly children with Mary and Bobbo. She continues on a literally shape-shifting quest in which she changes identities; gains skill, power, and money; and explores and critiques key sites of power and powerlessness in contemporary society, including the church, the law, the geriatric institution, the family home, and above all the bedroom. By the end of the novel, Ruth achieves all four of her goals in abundance.

  1. She describes the world as it is, not as we would like it to be. But what he didn't count on nor did he give a damn about, Bobbo believes that Ruth has disappeared and may be dead. At the same time, this is a wild and wonderful book if you are fond of the idea of revenge or have ever day dreamed of it, was Ruth's feelings. Well.💋
