Sarah explains that she doesn't know how to drive a wagon, but I only skimmed it back then. I'm grateful to this article for reminding me of this book's existence, mostly for the blood-pounding "Miss Wilder, but everyone jumps in to say they'll teach. Anna wants to ask Plxin if she sings.

Then the dogs start barking and the kids look outside to see the wagon fall toward the house! In the evening, Sarah sits on the porch and cuts Caleb's hair. Then Sarah tells them that they're going to name the chickens that Maggie and her family gave them-they're not going to kill and eat them. This story is so sweet every time.

At the beginning of the book, the Witting family has been made up of the same three people for a while: Jacob Witting and his children, Anna and Caleb. His wife died after giving birth to Caleb, and though the children are older now, it's still difficult for Jacob to take care of them. On top of that, the kids long for a mother to bring some sunshine and life into their family.

The family is comprised only of Caleb, a young boy, Anna, an older girl, and Papa, as Mother passed away giving birth to Caleb. One day, Papa decides to search for a new wife to help him take care of the farm and the children. Eventually, a woman named Sarah arrives from Maine. At first, Sarah misses home dearly, but she slowly falls in love with the family and the plains, and the family falls in love with her at the same pace. They weather the seasons together, including a great storm that damages the house, and Sarah constantly demonstrates her independence, hard-work, and bravery. At the end of the book, she leaves for town.
